The next day we planned an early start - 8:30 was early for us to be organised and on the road. We wanted to walk the nearby Vintgar gorge, and so decided we should do this before the day became too hot. This was a great plan, as we hadn't realised what a popular activity this was, and so on the return leg we had to share much of the 2 person walkway with bus loads of new arrivals.
The gorge is very picturesque. A narrow canyon, lined with beech trees and a fast clear blue river winding through it. The walk way was mostly boardwalk, cantilevered out from the rocky gorge wall, with a few bridge crossings so you got great views up the river. We were shaded most of the way, and decided due to the warming day that we wouldn't bother with the round trip route that took you through open fields in the full sun.
Heather had thought this would be a great rafting river, apart from the intact tree trunks that lay across the gorge at most bends, ready to decapitate any river user. And of course, we kept spying great swimming holes with easy access. However, at the end of the walk when heather went down to the river for a splash and freshen up, she quickly declared that the water was cooler than the Ruatiti, a true measure that it was way to cold for swimming.
