Gadding about in London

Weve done a variety of fun things in this city, always looking for cheap or free options.

A night at the proms - On my wish list was a visit to The Royal Albert Hall - where my grandparents reportedly sung the Messiah as  part of a choir. We were going to just try and pop in for a squizz, but amazing Heather went searching, and announced that we had free tickets to a night at the proms, with some classical performance. I didn't do any research, but was worried that what I had seen was going to mean I maybe trapped at a concert of some high brow classical music that I would be unable to appreciate or escape. But the night was enthralling from the moment we arrived - the venue is just spectacular, and even more so when a full orchestra, 3 choirs, a tenor and soprano are all warming up. The sounds were amazing, and our seat meant we had a great view of the conductor and half the orchestra. And when the main performance started, I turned to Heather, delighted that it was a piece of music I knew, and boy did they blow your socks off. O Fortuna was played with such gusto, with the Orchestra building up powerful sounds, matched by three choirs and the conductor putting everything he had into the performance.

Random wanderings - Leicester Square

 Soho

A favorite activity of ours has been biking in the parks - just hire a cycle, ride around and return it to any available docking station for just a few quid. Lucky to have sunny days for Hyde park again and Battersea Park.

Kensington Palace
Again to utilise our pass we popped into Kensington palace, didnt catch up with any royals, and the tea and cakes were rather disappointing. But if you have seen the film of the young Victoria, Heather and I used the stairs as the young princess was required, always with the hand of some responsible adult.

Then, true to her word, that I had to be prepared for a week night outing most weeks, we went off to the local theatre to see a show from the Edinburgh Festival. The Christians - complete with an on stage choir singing revival gospel.
