Volterra

The drive to Rome was going to take awhile, but despite this we decided to get on the road early so we had time to take a detour to the medieval town of Volterra, a place we had heard two people speak of with great affection. It was a bit out of the way - an hour on a winding road that climbed high to a hilltop spot that was just like out of a story book.

We wandered the narrow streets, visited the local basilica which had fresco adorned walls, went into the palace of a local family that was displayed in its original state with a stunning yet gawdy mix of baroque and renaissance furnishings and the things wealthy people of the time filled their homes with.

Picked out some tasty locally produced deli food including a small slab of panaforte and enjoyed a wine with lunch that was from the region.
